BFA Presentation: No Signal
Our culture is infected with a painful, contagious, socially transmitted condition of overload, debt, anxiety and waste resulting from the dogged pursuit of more. It is a part of our culture to obtain wealth and power because it is believed that it will enrich quality of life and consumption becomes confused as a factor of success to establish identity and love and interact most positively in our society. People become more and more inclined to define themselves by what they possess with the subtle quest for more ebbing in the background of people’s minds. A vicious cycle of economic success leaving individuals unfulfilled and hungry only for more wealth, finding that they are unable to get pleasure from the things they buy and that increasingly material things may come to dominate their time and thoughts to the detriment of personal relationships and to feelings of happiness.
Value is misplaced in our society and it is the wrong path to happiness. Focus is placed on what you can buy to be a better person rather than do. Owning the latest and greatest products shapes our identities. Survival needs are met with consumption and a false sense of happiness fills the void.
